In an age where everything is just a click away and disappears again with the next click – the next news item, the next image, the next song or even the next brutal war – there are no longer any moments that allow for leisurely idleness and romantic contemplation. Romance, what was that again? For STAY ROMANTIC, Hamburg-based choreographer Barbara Schmidt-Rohr once again works with the contrasts between nature and digitality. Nature has lost its innocence, it is no longer intact; traces of destruction have been left behind in the scenario on stage. The audience finds itself surrounded by felled tree trunks and gazes at a painted panoramic sky reminiscent of pre-digital illusionary spaces from the late Romantic period. At the same time, a video layer references contemporary hyper-pop, which in turn encounters styles from the 1980s, the last pre-digital era. In the scenario, which slowly pulsates through different times and layers of perception, young performers of various ages talk about the current ecological crisis, species extinction, loss and its finality. But also about love. Barbara Schmidt-Rohr recently impressed with her installation work DIE KOMMENDEN TRÄUME (The Coming Dreams), in which she transferred VR aesthetics into analogue choreographies.
